Purity Culture Shames Rape Victims

I haven’t been okay since the day a minister preached a sermon that gave women tips on how to find and marry the man of your dreams.

“If you want men lining up at your door,” he roared. “There’s only one thing you need to do stay pure.”

While Amens echoed around the sanctuary, I quickly wiped a tear from my eye.

My fate was sealed.

Weeks earlier, I had been raped.

I was 15 years old.

Even though consensual pre-marital sex differs from rape, in purity culture, it doesn’t matter. If you were no longer a virgin, you were no longer pure. Damage goods.
